The Cuban government has strict visa requirements and we encourage our customers to verify their eligibility for a Cuban visa from the Embassy of Cuba in Washington, D.C., prior to departure date. Cuban-born individuals have special visa requirements, regardless of citizenship (click here for additional information). Please ensure that your passport is valid for the duration of your stay in Cuba and that it is in good, clean condition.
Cuban Health Insurance
All non-Cuban residents need Cuban approved health insurance in order to travel to Cuba. The government of Cuba charges the equivalent of $25 for health coverage per passenger. The $25 is already included in the price of your ticket. Details regarding your policy:

Terms and conditions of the travel insurance may be accessed/downloaded from the ESICUBA website at
Health coverage is valid for 30 days from arrival in Cuba. A copy of your Spirit boarding pass can serve as your “proof of coverage.”
To activate the insurance coverage, the traveler or any person accompanying him/her, shall proceed as follows:
- Contact, via telephone or email, the Assistance Alarm Center (, and provide the following information: first and last name, air carrier used to travel to Cuba, entry date, Cuba address and phone number, and a description of the services required.
- Once the traveler is at the health institution/facility, he/she will present the following documents: a copy of the boarding pass (electronic or a hard copy), passport and identity card.
- If the traveler arrives at the health institution/facility without first contacting the Assistance Alarm Center, he/she shall contact the Assistance Alarm Center to provide information relating to the subject event as well as to the assistance received.
- The covered medical and health transportation related costs and expenses, should be carried out pursuant to the subject physician’s order, with the Assistance Alarm Center.
By complying with the foregoing indications, the Assistance Alarm Center will be able to control, in all its phases, the corresponding provision of medical services and guarantee the related costs and expenses, pursuant to the covered benefits.
Special requirements for Cuban Nationals with U.S. residence:
The required documents depend on when you left Cuba: before or after December 31, 1970.
If BEFORE:
- A U.S. passport that’s valid for the entire length of stay
- A HE-11 visa, which can be obtained through the Cuban Consulate
- Health insurance: The Cuban government requires all visitors (all passengers including lap children) to have health insurance that covers the territory of Cuba; for U.S. citizens, this means local Cuban health insurance. When purchasing your Spirit ticket to Cuba, Cuban health insurance is automatically included in the cost of your fare (a $25 surcharge). Terms and conditions of the health insurance can be accessed from the ESICUBA website.
If AFTER:
- A Cuban passport with the appropriate "Habilitacíon" authorization and Prorroga sticker
- (Please contact the Cuban Consulate for details on how to obtain a "Habilitacíon" authorization and a Prorroga sticker)
- Health insurance: The Cuban government requires all visitors (all passengers including lap children) to have health insurance that covers the territory of Cuba; for U.S. citizens, this means local Cuban health insurance. When purchasing your Spirit ticket to Cuba, Cuban health insurance provided by ESICUBA is automatically included in the cost of your fare (a $25 surcharge). Terms and conditions of the health insurance can be accessed from the ESICUBA website.
Special requirements for Cuban residents:
- A Cuban passport with the appropriate "Habilitacíon" authorization and Prorroga sticker

- Residence of re-entry permit issued by Cuba
